New owners of Colorado equine real estate are often on a learning curve.  From selecting the right horse property to the right horses and equipment, entry into the equestrian arena can be daunting.

The Colorado equestrian world is composed of a broad range of equestrian activities held in a number of locations. So there are several reasons why horses are transported. They go to the veterinarian, to trailheads, to rodeos and shows and other competitions.  There are many sizes and configurations of horse trailers.  They are as different as one-horse trailers, self-propelled horse vans, and semi-driven rigs.

Qualities of Horse Trailers

What is the best type of horse trailer use in Colorado to get from place to place and back home?  The answer is not cut and dry. First of all, it is best to procure horse trailers versus livestock trailers. However, some livestock trailers are suitable for horses and work well for ranchers who are raising several types of animals.  Below are some basic considerations.

  1. Trailers specifically designed for horses are fully enclosed and have inside dividers to separate the animals. Livestock trailers are usually slatted and have no dividers.
  2. The enclosed horse trailer requires temperature control and airflow, other qualities usually missing in livestock trailers.
  3. Hitches are important. Usually bumper pull hitches and gooseneck hitches are used for smaller trailers.  Very large horse trailers may require fifth wheel hitches.
  4. Straight load or slant load? The straight load trailer faces horses forward and side-by-side. Slant load trailers align animals diagonally with noses pointing left. This arrangement is more challenging for handlers but may accommodate more horses.
  5. Most horse trailers are loaded from the rear and others from the side ramp. Side ramp trailers are more costly but make it easier for the horse to be loaded and unloaded.
  6. Horses are loaded onto the trailer by walking up the ramp or stepping up into the trailer. Rear doors that open downward act as ramps.
  7. Steel construction is stronger and less expensive than aluminum. Repairs are easier on steel but it does rust. In contrast, aluminum is lighter, may corrode, and can bear greater weight.
  8. A trailer should be at least 10 inches higher than the horses had and allow 6 inches per horse on the sides.
  9. Storage is another consideration. Supplies and feed must be accommodated in some way. Many larger horse trailers are designed with tack rooms.
  10. Trailers with living quarters are also available for anywhere from $20,002 $200,000 +.
