Monument is the high point between Denver and Colorado Springs with an elevation of 6960 feet. There are plenty of views of Pike's Peak and the Pike National Forest and plenty of open space. The 15-mile Santa Fe Regional Trail runs south to the boundary of the Air Force Academy as it follows part of the old Atkinson, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. Its graveled route supports a wide variety of activities such as biking, hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing--along with horseback riding.
Historic downtown is city enough for the town's 1971 residents, but the rural population swells the ranks quickly. Visitors enjoy the old, wooden sidewalks and the shops on Second and Front Streets: a folk art gallery, a Victorian tea house and gift, antique and toy shops. Numerous restaurants, including a sought-after basket of fish and chips, satisfy the taste buds and energize you for a day out on the trail. Of course, all of the big-city amenities are only 20-30 minutes away, including major cultural events, shopping and dining.
Employment choices abound with a great location between two bustling cities and many thriving smaller towns along the I-25 corridor. In this highly educated area, there are wonderful public schools run by the Lewis-Palmer School District including elementary, middle schools and a high school, supplemented by a charter school, a Montessori school and local parochial schools. And the area also supports 4-H and many activities for young cowboys and cowgirls.
