Choosing Colorado Horse Trailers for Good Douglas County Real Estate

Pick-up trucks pulling horse trailers around Douglas County real estate add to the western ambience.  Although development during the last 20 years from Denver to Colorado Springs added in many new subdivisions, beautiful Douglas County ranches and farms signal that horses very much at home along the Front Range. 

Douglas County cities and towns great for Colorado horse properties include Larkspur, Parker, Franktown, Perry Park, Sedalia, and Castle Rock.  The ranching communities possibly house more horses than people.  Horses living in Douglas County are transported in horse trailers to rodeos, 4-H events, shows, and trails.  We see them on our country roads and on Interstate 25, which streams north/south through Douglas County.

Considerations when buying a horse trailer

The tow vehicle and hitch are extremely important to the safety of transporting horses.  The horse trailer must be coordinated with the capacity of the pickup truck or other tow vehicle.  Before purchasing a horse trailer, determine how much it weighs.  The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating noted on the sticker of the trailer is the manufacturers recommended capacity of the trailer including the weight of the trailer and anything being hauled and it.  Find the trailer weight on the Certificate of Origin or the title or way it on a scale.  Add up the weight of the trailer, weight of the horses, hay, grain, and tack to find out the Gross Vehicle Weight and be sure the tow vehicle can manage it.

Modern-day horse trailers can be pretty snazzy.  The overall quality of the trailer can be assessed rather quickly.  Sometimes, a higher price tag may not mean better quality.  How thick is the sheet metal?  Is the wiring exposed or in closed?  What is the finish like?  How strong is the trailer?

When comparing prices, be sure to compare equal amenities.  For example, do to different trailers have similar features?  LED lights, brakes, the front rock guard, fenders, ramps, roof vents, dome lights, and the rear ramp door.

Law requires brakes for each axle.  Check the axles, brakes, lights, coupler, and jack.  Look under the floor mats.  Tires are important for stability of horse trailers.  Radial tires are preferable.  

Maintaining a horse trailer

To keep your horse trailer in tiptop condition, wash it by hand with mild soap and water.  Use a soft cloth and window cleaner to wipe Plexiglas windows.  Seal the outside seams with silicone.  Wash the floors and consider adding a wood floor to high traffic areas.  Remove the oxidation from the chrome and gravel guard once in a while and apply wax or aluminum protectant.  To avoid moisture damage, do not cover with a tarp.  It is preferable to store horse trailers under a roof or in the shade.
