Along the banks of the South Platte River, a main Colorado transportation route for centuries, lies the quiet though eclectic town of Platteville.  Her friendly atmosphere and over 2,500 residents welcome many a newcomer looking for respite from the Denver metropolis 37 miles to the south.

The rich soil and rich soul of the area make it a fine place to live a long and active horse life.  Many area horses participate in the Colorado 4-H Horse Show, the Colorado State University Horsemanship Camp, the Rocky Mountain Horse Show Association events and numerous other shows and courses like Bits 'n Bridles--cuz' this is Colorado!  And folks here do love their horses.

They also love bikes and skis, hikes and trees, trails and rivers, and to gather the community!  All are invited to the August Harvest Festival in town, including the Harvest Daze 5K Run and Walk from Riverview Park.  And if you can't make it then, swoop into town online and glimpse nature's tender moment on the Fort Vrain Eagle Cam.

But when you do get to town, be sure to take a peak into Fort Vasquez, the 1830s fur trading post restored as a Colorado Historical Society museum on the south side of town.  It tells the story of the founding of this town in 1871 after the Denver Pacific Railroad reached this site on the Platte River.  The museum exhibits also recreate the era of fur trade, display Native American artifacts, and document information on topics such as mountain-man etiquette!  (Couldn't we all use some of that?)

Modern technology and the Internet have prompted the citizens and lawmakers to enter into a more responsive form of government.  See " p

Major employers are ConAgra, a ready mix company and the Weld County School District RE-1.  And, of course, the town has a Chamber, a Lions club and a VFW.  Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist and Baptist churches are in town, but you can find just about any spiritual leaning or etiquette or ethics somewhere in the big city down the road.
