Popular equine trails through the Pike National Forest, San Isabel National Forest and Comanche National Grasslands will give up years of adventure for the lucky ones owning Central Colorado equine real estate.  The entire urban recreational area is referred to as the PSICC.  The combined terrain totals over 4500 square miles--continuing all the way from the mountains to western Kansas prairies.

In addition to the Pike, San Isabel, Cimarron and Comanche areas, the swath includes several designated wildernesses.  Buffalo Peaks Wilderness and Lost Creek Wilderness have facilities for horse camping.

Giddy up!  How many years will it take you to pack up and explore the magnificence?  The PSICC comprises Fourteeners, mountains peaking over 14,000 feet elevations, and camping along the South Platte in the South Platte Ranger District at Indian Creek Equestrian Campground.  Stay another day to examine the dinosaur tracks at Picket Wire Canyon.

Horse Trails

Many people jump into the saddle to help maintain the trails and natural environment.  San Carlos Ranger District, Comanche Ranger District, and AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps.  So many places in PSICC to visit on horseback!  Start with the horse trails through the Pikes Peak Ranger District: Crags Trail #664, Horsethief Park Trail #704, Lovell Gulch Trail #706, Rainbow Gulch Trail #714, Rampart Reservoir Trail System, Red Rocks Trail #708, Ring the Peak Trail, St. Mary’s Falls Trail #624.

Horse trails in the Cimarron National Grassland include Conestoga Trailhead, Murphy Trailhead, Santa Fe Companion Trail, Santa Fe National Historic Trail, and Turkey Trail. In the Comanche National Grassland, there are also more to choose from: Picket Wire Canyon, Picket Wire Corrals Interpretive Site, Picture Canyon Arch Rocket Trail, Sierra Vista Interpretive Site, and Vogel Canyon Picnic Area.

Horse Camping

One of these days, plan to take your horse on a multi-day trek through Cimarron National Grassland. Both of you can stay at Cimarron Campground and the Cimarron Group Site for along the Santa Fe Companion Trail or Santa Fe National Historic Trail. There are also many places for horse camping in the San Carlos Ranger District.
