All it takes to settle in the vast prairie of Hudson, Colorado horse country is a good sense of humor and a good horse. Just south of Greeley, Colorado real estate and 30 minutes from downtown Denver real estate, Hudson is largely a bedroom community with many residents taking city jobs in Brighton, Greeley, Boulder, Denver and the like. Horse ranches near Greeley have an idyllic feel. And Weld County horse ranches, one after another, add to the scenic drive along the highway.
Originally, Hudson was a water stop for the railroad, which was responsible for much of the Hudson farm development. Other local stops along the rail such as Keenesburg were only livestock stops. That same railroad that brought settlers to the area was also responsible for moving numerous farmers away during tough times when water from the South Platte River could only be stretched so far. Many Hudson farms are now being divided into smaller horse ranches in Weld County. That means more homes for sale in Hudson for horse owners, more Hudson houses for sale on horse property and lots of recent city dwellers coming over to bliss out in the sunsets, starlight and open space.
But the town is forward-looking and has developed goals and objectives for the future. Founded in 1887, it celebrated its centennial in 1987 with a parade and other festivities and a wonderful community spirit. This pioneer town of 1,700 is currently striving to attain a small-town population level yet boast enough folks and businesses to be able to provide services and amenities as well as to improve the quality of life.
With a strong agricultural background, Colorado State University uses local areas to develop woody plants for introduction into the Plant Select® program for Colorado. A main employer in the town is Cal Pine Electric “Plant”—no pun intended. And another “plant”, the Pepper Pod, been a wonderful dinner destination for longer than most locals can remember. Oh, and, kids here have their feet firmly planted on the abundant ground, many having been raised doing lots of farm chores. They balance that out with attendance at Hudson Headstart programs and elementary schools and move on to the Weld County Class 3A junior and senior high schools.
So, whether you’re a writer or a rider or you’re looking for the vastitude to enjoy some solitude, follow the wagon trail here, partner, and plant your boots in some hometown soil!
