Dreaming of picking up a horse property in Denver Colorado?  Possibly a lifestyle change into the equine world?  Once you and your equine friends get settled into the area, then think about a camping expedition to explore the beautiful forests in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

Horse properties in Denver are often located near or accessible to equestrian trails.  That makes it easy to head out on the trails for picnics.  Some have watering holes for horses.  Few have equine campgrounds.  The Canyon Lakes Ranger District includes a couple camping places that accommodate horses.

Canyon Lakes Ranger District

Canyon Lakes Ranger District in the Roosevelt National Forest of north-central Colorado is the closest Ranger District to Denver. Open year-round, the Canyon Lakes Ranger District encompasses about 650,000 acres including four wilderness areas.  It is mostly in Larimer County, which is west of Fort Collins.  Access Canyon Lakes Ranger District via State Highways 34, 36 and 14.

Canyon Lakes Ranger District includes picturesque settings, lakes and streams, and historic districts.  Colorado’s Wild and Scenic River flows through the wilderness.  Hundreds of miles of equestrian trails are open for horses.  Online resources describe the location and difficulty of some three dozen trails.  Outside the wilderness the trails are shared.  Trails also connect to national recreation trails.

Horse Camping

Set in the ponderosa pine forest, Jacks Gulch Equestrian Campground features five horse camping sites with small corrals.  The campground is surrounded by a nature trail.  Two equestrian sites may be reserved for a fee.  These get booked up months in advance.

Jack Gulch Equestrian Area is not too far from Fort Collins.  Proceed north of Fort Collins on US Highway 287.  Turn west onto Highway 14 and continue 26 miles.  Turn south on Pingree Park Road/County Road 63 E. and continue 6 miles.

The Ranger District offices can identify locations of equestrian areas in the wilderness.

Reservations

The Ranger District has an office in Fort Collins which is open during the week days.  The equestrian campgrounds can be reserved by calling 877-444-6777 or visiting recreation.gov.  Noxious weed-free hay is the only type permitted on public lands in Colorado.
