Fortunately for equestrians in Castle Rock CO homes, Douglas County has gone all out to develop and maintain horseback riding trails.  Douglas County and Castle Rock are located in the red rocks just north of the Black Forest.  Castle Rock and the surrounding areas are about midway between Denver and Colorado Springs. 

Douglas County equestrian facilities make it possible for families with smaller Colorado horse properties to access many trails.  There are approximately 20 areas maintained by the Division of Open Space and Natural Resources.  These include trails ranging from 1.3 to 24 miles long.  Most of them have water facilities, toilets, and parking.  Many provide picnic areas as well.  From shortest to longest miles of trails, we list them here:

Glendale Farm

Glendale Farm features over a mile of natural surface trails and a protected picnic area plus a hitching rail.

Bayou Gulch Regional Park

Bayou Gulch Regional Park features three miles of crusher fines surface trailed and a picnic pavilion.

Spruce Mountain

Spruce Mountain features three miles of trails next to Spruce Meadows.
Nelson Open

Nelson Open, which is accessible at Sharptail, features three miles of natural trails and a hitching rail.

Columbine

Columbine features over three miles of crushed concrete trails and a pavilion.

Bluffs Regional Park

Bluffs Regional Park offers 3.5 miles of crusher fines trails and a picnic pavilion.  However there is no access to water.

Sharptail Ridge

Sharp tail Trail features 4.2 miles of natural surface, a hitching rail, and a pavilion.

Dawson Butte

Dawson Butte features over five miles of bridle paths and natural surfaces.  There is no water access.

Hidden Mesa

Hidden Mesa features five- and seven-mile trails with natural and concrete surfaces.  There is a picnic pavilion.

Pike Hill/Ringtail Trail

Ringtail Trail is a seasonal, seven-mile natural trail near Pike National Forest and Indian Creek.

Spruce Meadows

Spruce Meadows features 8.5 miles of natural trails and a hitching rail.  There are ponds along the way.

Greenland

Greenland features 11 miles of trails with crusher fines surface, hitching rail, and a picnic pavilion.

Highline Canal Trail

Highline Canal Trail features 13 miles of trails with crusher fines surfaces.  The water access is a seasonal Canal.

Pike National Forest- Indian Creek Trail

Indian Creek Trail is 15 miles long.  The water supply is seasonal and the trail surfaces are natural.

East-West Trail

East-West Trail is 20 miles long.  Parts are crusher fines and others are natural.  There is a picnic pavilion but no water access.

Chatfield State Park

Chatfield State Park offers 24 miles of natural surface trails and numerous pavilions.  A river passes through Park.

Other areas have dispersed trails.  They include DuPont, Bio Gulch Open Space, and Prairie Canyon Ranch.  The latter two offer guided rides by arrangement.
