Denver Art Museum

Find out about local horse culture.  Hidden in the layers of the downtown Denver Art Museum, owners of Colorado equestrian land will discover fascinating information about hooves that galloped through the Denver area over time.  Visitors of all ages will happen upon interesting tidbits of information and one of the artists’ favorite subjects: horses.

Historic Importance of Horses in Settling the West

Exhibits at Denver Art Museum present glimpses into the Western lifestyle through art.  For example, permanent exhibits of artwork with titles such as Building the West, The Western Frontier, Shoshone Indians at a Mountain Lake, and bronze sculptures from the Taos Society of Artists capture early life in the Denver area.  At that time, horses assuredly played the roles of man’s best friend and co-worker.

Petrie Institute of Western American Art

A large collection of Western paintings and bronzes donated by William and Dorothy Harmsen in 2001 sparked the establishment of the Institute of Western American Art.  The Institute’s namesake was inspired by a subsequent endowment by the Thomas A. Petrie Family.  Additional gifts have helped the Denver Art Museum acquire important works.  The Roath Collection brings art and sculptures (circa 1877-1972).

The Petrie Institute of Western American Art presents to the public a wealth of information through exhibits at the Denver Art Museum (DAM).  The Institute is purposed to enrich the lives of residents of in the Rocky Mountain region.  More specifically, newcomers better appreciate Denver horse properties through the spectrum of our equestrian heritage.

A national leader in scholarly research and programming with regards to art of the American West, the Petrie Institute studies, collects, preserves, and exhibits Western Art.  Subjects may be the people, the history, and the landscape.  Horses play a large role over several centuries in Colorado.  They were used for transportation, wartime activities, pulling stagecoaches and wagons, plowing fields, building, herding, and many more necessary activities.
